Coccinelle

Born Jacques Charles Dufresnoy on August 23, 1931 , Coccinelle started her Showbusiness career in 1951 at Madame Arthur. It was here where her mother sold flowers that she is said to have received the stage name Coccinelle (French for Ladybug) because of the red and black polka dot dress she was wearing.  A rising star, she soon started working and touring with Le Carrousel.  While Le Carrousel was on tour in Algeria, is when Bambi first saw travesti/trans people. As she gazed upon Coccinelle and the rest of the Troupe, feeling somewhat out of place in her own life, she knew that she too belonged.  In the mid 1950s as  Coccinelle's popularity rose , Carrousel Headliner's Zambella and Guilda started to grow wary. Zambella left Le Carroussel for a while but would return in the 60's . Guilda left Paris for good and started working with the Jewel Box Revue in the USA. Zambella also worked at JBR, it's unclear if it was at the same time. Guilda ended up in Montreal and became one of Canada's Legendary Female Impersonators.  In 1958 after years of hormone therapy and some cosmetic procedures Coccinelle traveled to Casablanca to have gender affirming surgery ( "sex-change" at the time) at the "Clinique du Parc ". She was one of Dr.  Georges Burou's first Patients.  Burou was a gynecologist and perfected his "sex-change" technique , performing thousands of them in his lifetime.  He also operated on Bambi, Capucine, April Ashley and many other ladies of Carrousel and Madame Arthur. Coccinelle returned to France and legally changed her name and gender on her documents. She was recognized as Jacqueline Charlotte Dufresnoy.  She started dating French journalist Francis Bonnet and the two married on  March 16, 1962. This was the first legally recognized marriage of a Transperson in France , and was even recognized by the Catholic church.  However the marriage would soon be dissolved as the couple split not that long after the wedding.  Coccinelle then started dating her Paraguayan born  backup dancer ,  Mario Heyn.  The pair travelled all over the world together notably a South American tour just after her marriage to Bonnet in 1962 .  He can also be seen alongside of her in the film Los Viciosos / Interpol Attaque . in 1963 she had a 7-month residency at Paris' famed Olympia theater. The show titled "Cherchez la femme", was produced by Bruno Coquatrix . On March 14, 1966 Coccinelle married Mario and were together for several years. Coccinelle published her autobiography Coccinelle in 1987 . Mario died on July 31, 1988 , I'm unsure if they were still together at the time of his death. Coccinelle would continue to tour the world stopping off at Berlin and performing at "Chez Nous" and "Chez Romy", Romy Haag's Cabaret. Eventually Coccinelle came back Paris and work at Madame Arthur after Le carrousel closed. The last major production she starred in was Casino Paris hosted by famous French tv host Pascal Sevran in 1989.  Pascal had a popular music tv show called "La chance aux chansons" which ran from 1984- 2000. Coccinelle appeared on the show and Le Carrousel alum Fetiche (Marie-Pierre Vancallement) worked on the production of the show after retiring from Le carrousel. At some point in time, she started to refer to herself as "Monique", which many people still know her as till this day. Coccinelle founded the association Devenir Femme which helped to provide support to French Transexuals. In 1996 she married her 3rd husband Thierry Wilson who was a drag performer at Chez Michou by the stage name of Zize Dupanier.  In the last few years of her life, she moved to Marseilles and opened up a small Cabaret.  Coccinelle suffered a stroke and was hospitalized in 2006 she passed away on October 9, 2006 .  On May 18, 2017 a Parisian promenade was inaugurated in Coccinelle's name. Its located-on Boulevard de Clichy in between Place Pigalle and Rue des Martyrs at the intersection of the street where Madame Arthur is Located.
