Le Carrousel
Opened in October of 1947 by Marcel Ouizman , Le Carrousel was said to be the product of the legendary "travesti" Zambella and Robert Lasquin, who produced the show and stage decor. Originally opening at 40 rue du Colisee , Le Carrousel had some difficulty around 1950 and had to close temporarily due to some crackdown on laws targeting either homosexuals or cross-dressing. I cant confirm that Madame Arthur had the same problem, im not sure if the proximity of the rue du Colisee to the Champs-Elysees had any part in the crackdown, but it is documented that Le Carrousel re-opened in May of 1951. Many celebrities visited Le Carrousel like : Josephine Baker , Bob Hope, Joe DiMaggio. The Colisee Carrousel location, or Le Grand Carrousel as Bambi calls it, closed New Years eve 1962. It would re-open some months later at its Montparnasse location 29 rue Vavin next to its "sister" cabaret Elle et Lui "where the woman is king". Elle et Lui a lesbian establishment also featured male impersonators. Before the arrival of Le Carrousel, Elle occupied the 29 rue Vavin location catering to the femme crowd, and 31 Lui was where the butch hung out. Eventually they merged and Elle et Lui moved into 31 rue Vavin and shared a dressing room with Le Carrousel between the 2 addresses. Famous Dutch singer and actress, muse to David Bowie, Romy Haag joined the cast of Le Carrousel in 1965 before skyrocketing to fame. Le Carrousel closed around 1985. Some time later Le Carrousel Paris opened at 40 rue Pierre Fontaine, not under the management of Monsieur Marcel but by associates of the Vavin location. Coincidentally that new location was once Chez Josephine owned by Josephine Baker.
